Insects and dragons

This program focuses on the subject matter of insects and dragons and offers students the opportunity to explore real and imagined creatures in their artmaking.

This experience offers them opportunities to creatively transform ideas from 2-dimensional drawings of insects and creatures into 3-dimensional mythical beings using wire, fibre and fabric.

The structure and movement of these 3-dimensional creatures is emphasised and students are encouraged to create new and original creatures that suggest feelings of power or the creation of another mood.

Eucalypt forest

This excursion focuses on the habitats and interactions in a eucalypt forest, a significant environment.  It describes examples of ecosystems and habitats in the forest and how they meet the needs of living things, in particular how plants are used by animals.  It also provides examples of a food chain in the forest.

Students examine the importance of natural vegetation and natural resources to the environment, animals and people and learn about the ways people value environments, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

During the day there is a mix of teacher-led and student-centred activities which are explained on mini task cards. The students stop in at least four places on the walk where they select one or more of the tasks to complete independently in that location.  A bag of equipment is provided and each student receives an activity journal and map.

Secret life of plants

looking through the microscope

This program focuses upon the classification, life cycles and survival of living things. Using the our local environment, students investigate and classify a range of plant species, recognise the interdependence of plants and their insect pollinators.

Students design and produce an experimental system to monitor the growth of plants from seed and examine the critical role plants play as a habitat for a wide variety of animals. Students will be equipped with a field journal, allowing a range of measurements and observations to be collected for further examination and use back in the classroom. Incursion or excursion.

War on waste

This program is aimed at undertaking a waste investigation of rubbish collected from students' and your school's playground rubbish bins.

This will provide the material to allow enquiry based learning and problem solving discussions with the whole class.

The investigation findings allow students to determine ways in which they can convince their school to be more environmentally conscious with regards to waste from the playground. Incursion only.

Supports Stage 2 Human Society and Its Environment (2024), Stage 3 Science and Technology (2024), Stage 5 Science (2024).

BeeAware

The BeeAware program identifies, describes and explains the importance of pollinators in our natural, built and agricultural environments. The program offers a hands-on experience into native bees and other pollinators, as well as the agricultural significant European honey bee.

The hands-on part of the program allows students to rob a hive (without the stings) and make a healthy honey smoothie while learning about the complex organisation of the social bee world.

Furthermore, students will use their creative minds to create a 'pollinator hotel' out of renewable materials and then find an appropriate location for it within the school's grounds. Incursion or excursion – 2 hour program
